Along with but a section of artillery, elements
of the Sixth Cavalry defended the position until after dark on the 26th,
when the torch was applied to such stores as could not be moved. The regiment
then withdrew, acting as rear guard. It marched all night, arriving at
Williamsburg about 8 a.m. on the 27th, and on the following day continued
on to Yorktown.
